The M256 is a new generation of inline-six (Inline-6 / L6) gasoline engines launched by Mercedes-Benz in 2017, marking the brand’s return to the classic inline-six architecture after nearly 20 years (the M276 series was designed to fully replace the V6 architecture).
Evolution and Cutting-Edge Technology of the M256.930:
High-Power, High-Specification Version: The M256.930 is the high-power variant within the M256 family, primarily installed in Mercedes-Benz’s top-tier flagship models (such as the all-new W223 S-Class S 500, GLE 450/530, etc.).
Beltless Design: The M256 eliminates traditional engine belt drives; auxiliary components such as the water pump and air conditioning compressor are all powered by a 48V high-voltage electrical system, significantly reducing mechanical wear on the engine.
Electronic Twin-Charging: This system combines an exhaust gas turbocharger (EGT) with a 48V electronically assisted compressor (eZV / Electric Auxiliary Compressor). At low RPMs, the electronic compressor builds pressure in just 0.3 seconds, completely eliminating the lag typically associated with traditional large-displacement turbochargers.
Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG): The electric motor is positioned between the engine and the 9G-Tronic transmission. In addition to providing seamless start-stop functionality, it can instantly deliver an additional 21–22 HP of power and 250 N·m of torque (EQ Boost function).
