The N18 (codenamed N18B16A) is the ultimate evolution of the Prince engine family, jointly developed by BMW and the French PSA Group
(to fully replace the earlier N14 engine, which had a high failure rate).
Technical Evolution: The N18 was introduced in 2010–2011 and was primarily installed in the MINI Cooper S, JCW, and R platform series
models. Compared to the earlier N14 engine, the N18 underwen significant technical upgrades,introducing BMW’s iconic Valvetronic electronic valve lift technology for the first time (combining DOHC + Double-VANOS + Valvetronic + single turbo with twin scroll + direct injection).
This completely resolved the N14’s issues with timing chain stretch, severe carbon buildup, and high oil consumption, resulting in
a qualitative improvement in both performance and reliability.
