The N16 (codenamed N16B16A) is the 1.6L naturally aspirated version of the Prince engine family, jointly developed by BMW and the French PSA Group. It was introduced to fully replace the earlier N12B16 engine,
which had a high failure rate.
Technical Evolution: The N16 engine debuted in late 2010 with the second mid-cycle refresh (LCI) of the MINI R platform and was primarily installed in models such as the MINI One, MINI Cooper
(non-S versions/non-turbocharged versions), and MINI Countryman. Compared to the earlier N12 engine, the N16 features an upgraded map-controlled oil pump, an improved timing chain tensioner design,
and optimizations to the Valvetronic electronic valve lift and Double-VANOS systems, significantly addressing the N12’s common issues of oil consumption, timing chain noise, and overheating.
