The N20 is a 2.0L inline-four turbocharged gasoline engine (full name: N20B20) introduced by BMW in 2011 to replace the previous-generation naturally aspirated six-cylinder N52/N53 engines, with a focus on high efficiency and low-rpm torque.
It features an aluminum alloy closed-loop cylinder block, plasma-sprayed cylinder walls, TwinPower Turbo technology, direct injection, and Double-VANOS variable valve timing combined with Valvetronic variable valve lift technology.
“RWD” refers to the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version; “aluminum oil pan” refers to an oil pan made of aluminum alloy. Factory-equipped rear-wheel-drive N20 models typically use phenolic resin (plastic) oil pans (for weight reduction and better sound insulation), while all-wheel-drive (xDrive) versions use aluminum alloy oil pans to support the front differential.
