The B48B20 is a 2.0T inline-four turbocharged engine developed by BMW based on the B-series modular platform (which shares the same architecture as the B38 three-cylinder and B58 six-cylinder engines) to fully replace the previous-generation N20 engine.
The China V-compliant versions of the B48 (primarily 2015–2019 model years) are not equipped with a GPF (gasoline particulate filter). They feature low exhaust backpressure, relatively light cooling demands, and fewer restrictions on engine ECU tuning, making them highly popular in the overseas aftermarket and the used parts trade.
2WD (Rear-Wheel Drive/RWD) Compatibility: The key differences between 2WD and 4WD bare engines lie in the oil pan and the front axle mounting holes. The 2WD version features a simpler long-block design and is directly compatible with BMW’s classic sDrive rear-wheel-drive models.
