What is engine assembly?The N55B30A is a 3.0L inline-six single-turbo, twin-scroll gasoline engine introduced by BMW in 2009 to replace the high-performance but heat-prone and high-maintenance N54 twin-turbo engine.
The N55 is BMW’s first engine to seamlessly integrate single twin-scroll turbo technology, third-generation Valvetronic (continuously variable valve lift), Double-VANOS (dual variable valve timing),
and direct injection.Distinction between Early (PWG) and Late (EWG) Models:
Early N55 (2009–2013): Features a pneumatic wastegate (PWG), with valve train and cylinder head oil passage designs that differ from the later electronic wastegate (EWG) versions.
Return of Valvetronic III and Integration into the Cylinder Head: Unlike the N54, which eliminated Valvetronic, the N55 reintegrated the Valvetronic stepless valve lift servo motor and eccentric shaft
into the top of the cylinder head, resulting in a more precise and compact design.
High-Strength Die-Cast Aluminum Alloy: The entire cylinder head is constructed from high-strength die-cast aluminum alloy, with the valve cover mounting surface and internal oil passages
precision-polished and optimized to prevent leaks.
Reman Fixes: Early-production N55 OEM cylinder heads commonly exhibited issues after prolonged operation, including abnormal noise caused by wear on the Valvetronic eccentric shaft and
valve pushrods, oil consumption due to aged valve oil seals, and blockage of the eccentric shaft oil passages at high temperatures. High-quality remanufactured cylinder heads undergo 100%
non-destructive testing and high-pressure water leak testing, feature ultra-precise surface planing (flatness < 0.02 mm), and are equipped with high-temperature-resistant fluorocarbon (Viton)
valve oil seals and reinforced valve guides, thoroughly eliminating the original factory’s durability concerns.
