The new 1GR-FE is an upgraded version (Dual VVT-i) of Toyota’s GR series 4.0L 60° V6 naturally aspirated gasoline engine, which has been in production since 2009 and remains in use today.
The original 1GR-FE was introduced in 2002 to replace the 5VZ-FE and featured an aluminum alloy block with cast-iron cylinder liners. In 2009, it was upgraded to the Dual VVT-i version: exhaust-side variable valve timing was added, the compression ratio was increased to 10.4:1, the pistons and crankshaft were optimized, and the cylinder liner honing and water jacket designs were improved, resulting in a power output increase to approximately 270–285 hp.
