The M272 3.5L (M272 E35 / KE35 / DE35) is a 90° V6 naturally aspirated gasoline engine introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2004; it is the main displacement variant in the M272 series.
It was developed from the previous-generation M112 engine and was first installed in the SLK 350 (R171) to replace the older M112 E32/E37. It was manufactured at the Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt plant in Germany, with a production run spanning approximately 2004–2013/2017.
The cylinder block features a die-cast aluminum alloy construction (90° angle) with embedded aluminum-silicon alloy cylinder liners (Al-Si liners). It is equipped with a balance shaft, DOHC (dual overhead camshafts), continuously variable valve timing (intake and exhaust), and hydraulic tappets. Versions include multipoint injection (KE) and direct injection CGI (DE). Overall, it is renowned for its smooth operation and ample power.
