The B48 series is a modular engine family introduced by BMW in 2014 (sharing a technical platform with the B38 three-cylinder and B58 six-cylinder engines) to replace the previous-generation N20 engine.
The B48B20 is the flagship model in the 2.0L turbocharged inline-four lineup for rear-wheel-drive and longitudinal-mount configurations. The cylinder block features an all-aluminum **closed-deck** design,
which offers greater strength than the N20’s open-deck structure and can withstand higher boost pressures. The cylinder walls are coated with a plasma-sprayed iron-based wear-resistant coating
(approximately 0.3 mm thick), eliminating the need for traditional cast-iron cylinder liners and achieving a balance between weight reduction and wear resistance.
