The 1GR-FE is a 4.0L naturally aspirated V6 gasoline engine from Toyota’s GR series. It was first installed in the 2002 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser Prado (Prado 120) to replace the older 3.4L 5VZ-FE engine.
The term “older model” specifically refers to the first-generation version produced from 2002 to 2009 (featuring intake-side VVT-i only), as distinguished from the improved Dual VVT-i version introduced after 2009. Production facilities included the Kamigo, Shimoyama, and Tahara plants in Japan, as well as the Alabama plant in the United States.
The cylinder block features an open-coolant-jacket aluminum alloy design with embedded spiny-type cast-iron liners to enhance bonding strength with the aluminum alloy. The engine is renowned for its reliability and durability, making it well-suited for use in SUVs and pickup trucks.
